Provides a carefully screened and individually paired adult volunteer mentor to a child who needs help with some aspect of their development (e.g. self-esteem, family issues, under-achievement, peer relationships, etc.). These long-term relationships are both preventative and interventional in intent. All "matches" are made and supported by a staff professional to keep the relationship goal-oriented and meeting the needs of the child as well as to intervene should issues arise. All children in the program must have an identifiable need that can be successfully addressed by a mentor and must consent/commit to being a part of the relationship. New relationships are for children between the ages of 6 and 12 but may continue until a child reaches age 18 or graduates from high school. Matching is affected by our ability to identify and recruit a suitable volunteer for a child insofar as each match is a custom creation based on the needs of the child, the abilities of the mentor and the likelihood of compatible personalities.
